Wendi Thomas has an excellent article in today's Commercial Appeal about the on-going debate over term limits in Memphis. In 1994, a referendum limited County Commissioners to two four-year terms by an overwhelming 81% of voters. Some County Commissioners who didn't like the referendum result sued to get the result thrown out. Now the Commissioners are using off-topic responses to defend their position to the voters, who are obviously outraged. The Shelby County Republican Party continues to point out how bad this decision was on their website. And Thomas' article indicates that Commissioners are trying to use everything from arguments liking term limits to racism all the way down to simply saying "the issue isn't whether we listen to the voters." Thomas' conclusion is apt-- "Voters, did you hear that?"
